About Ian

Ian is a passionate educator both in and out of the classroom, dedicated to creating authentic learning opportunities for students and adults. As a Peace Corps Volunteer, Ian taught English in a village school in southern Kyrgyzstan and caught the teaching bug. Since then, Ian has taught English, history, and digital journalism on the Navajo Nation, in Chengdu, China, and in Zurich, Switzerland. In the classroom, Ian designs project-based learning opportunities in stand-alone, International Baccalaureate Diploma, and Advanced Placement courses. Ian is a leader in using technology to transform learning, as well. For his work, Ian has been recognized as an Innovative Educator by Microsoft and has presented PBL curriculum at Microsoft’s European and Global Forum. As a teacher, Ian has a global reach through his Youtube channel of  flipped classroom-esque videos focused on modeling literacy and writing skills for high school students, especially in AP Literature & Composition and IB Language and Literature Higher and Standard Level courses. Ian is also a certified Level 4 Whitewater Kayaking Instructor by the American Canoe Association, and he leads student kayaking journeys around Switzerland and Europe. Along the way, Ian has earned a Master of Arts in Teaching – Secondary from Western New Mexico University and a Master of Education in Organizational Leadership & Development with an emphasis in private school leadership from the Klingenstein Center of Columbia University’s Teachers College. When not teaching, Ian spends time with his wife Kalley, a master teacher, and his two brilliant daughters, Dorothy and Juliet, at home or in the mountains.
